Fabian Baeza was born in Futaleufu and grew up in and around livestock ranches and horses. During Fabian’s youth, the only work available for young adults in Northern Patagonia was animal husbandry, as no tourism industry was yet in existence. Thus, Fabian excelled at horsemanship and was even a competitor in the Chilean Rodeo for some years.

It was originally Fabian’s life-plan to continue the work of his father as a Patagonia huaso and rancher. However, the Futaleufu region began to develop a world renown reputation in whitewater rafting circles and became known as one of the top five river rafting destinations in the world. This reputational gain brought in an influx of tourists to the region who wanted to explore other activities in addition to the river. Thus, by filling this need, Fabian was able to make the transition from making a living as a livestock rancher to tourism operator.

Fabian Baeza has life in two different worlds, that of the original Patagonia settlers and that of global tourism. Thus, he is a perfect “cultural ambassador” to bridge these worlds.
